Marathon Key or Vaca Key, as it is known on the charts, has an altogether different flavor than Key Largo or Islamorada. It is "the Heart of the Keys" and the gateway to the Lower Keys & Key West. Originally, it was named during the construction of Henry Flagler's railroad which ran from Miami to Key West in the early 1900s. You can still see the remnants of the old railroad bridges, now closed to traffic, in the Marathon area. Every one agrees they make a fine fishing pier.
Marathon also has an airport and a nine hole golf course. With a number of fine restaurants, great accommodations, and good ole Southern hospitality, Marathon can be your key to paradise.
As you leave Marathon and enter the Lower Keys, you first travel over the Seven Mile Bridge - seven miles of bridge over the ocean/bay with nothing under you but the bridge & the briny. A breathtaking sight!!
The Lower Keys also have their fascinating attractions like the Key Deer Preserve & the Bahia Honda State Park - voted #2 overall in excellence of US beaches. Here is the Keys Frozen in time.
